The Professional Development Committee held its second Forum entitled “the Impact of Journalism” at the Ain Aar campus. The guest speaker Ms. Scarlett Haddad is a journalist at l’Orient-le Jour & Express Magazine and a lecturer at ALBA. Haddad started with a critical overview of journalism focusing on Lebanon, then highlighted the discrepancies in the headlines of a selection of Lebanese newspapers. To link journalism to education, Haddad stressed the importance of nurturing “critical thinking” among our youth by encouraging students to ask intelligent questions, to question facts, to analyze what they read and to take a stand. The aim, added Haddad, is to raise “critical readers” and TV viewers who assume their responsibilities and who point out to any journal or TV station its discrepancies, inconsistencies or its failure to provide objective coverage.
After the forum, teachers who were attending were already discussing activities that they could conduct in class to raise thinkers, inquirers, reflective and open minded students using the press and the media.
