Anger is a normal human emotion. It is an intrinsic part of every personality and only becomes a problem when a reaction is expressed in inappropriate ways. The ability to manage one’s anger is an important asset. In light of this understanding, the Ain Aar Advisory Program has arranged for a series of seminars for parents titled Anger Coping – Stop, Think, Act. Mrs. Evienoula Assad has adapted a program of anger management tools for use in the classroom and all other school settings. The program’s objective is to help students develop skills for managing their own anger such as empathy, self-control, problem solving and conflict resolution. Mrs. Assad developed this program as part of her work on an advanced degree. It is based on research and work done by Dr. John Lochman and Daniel Goleman in the field of emotional intelligence. The seminars are a natural progression from the relaxation and effective listening workshops Mrs. Assad offered in the past, also through the advisory program. Much more than a lecture, Mrs. Assad and co-presenter Mrs. Nada Choucair, encourage seminar participants to interact with them beginning with some relaxation exercises. Parents take home more than information. They learn tools for how to become an active part of this invaluable lesson. Mrs. Choucair began the initial application of the program in lower elementary grades by opening every music class with relaxation exercises for breathing and movement. The program is now expanding to upper elementary and middle school levels and to the regular classroom.
