How much energy is contained in an orange or lemon, a carrot, cucumber, or potato? A team of girls set up electrodes and batteries to measure the current capability of these and other garden items for their Energie Dans Un Fruit Science Fair project at the Ras Beirut Middle School. A few of the many other subjects judges considered were Water Power, How to Make Your Own Perfume, Magnetism in Relation to the Compass, Distilling Coffee, and Les Sacs en Plastique Quel Gaspillage. One particularly interesting project was the Musical Diaper. Inspired by musical greeting cards, the group set about rigging the tiny musical device to sound a tinkling musical alarm when a baby diaper becomes wet. No need to wonder why baby is fussing or to risk diaper rash. The miniscule music box would be purchased only once and reattached to each fresh diaper. Science should stimulate more questions than answers, and now this group is asking themselves whether they should seek a patent for their invention.
