Mr. Humphreys points out his anticipated route through 50 countries over the next three years.
Ras Beirut middle school students were enthusiastic hosts to a very unusual guest speaker several weeks ago. Mr. Alastair Humphreys from Great Britain stopped in to meet and talk with IC students as he passed through Beirut on his trans-global bike ride. Mr. Humphreys is taking a bicycle trip around the world planned to cross 5 continents, 50 countries and 70,000 miles.
He carries only the most necessary equipment to sustain himself on his journey. He stows his gear in panniers attached to his bicycle. Everything must be minimal from his simple camping and cooking apparatus to a few precious personal possessions.
Our British biking friend left his home in Yorkshire on September 1, 2001 and expects to take three years to complete his intended route. At the moment he is on his third continent as he works his way down the east coast of Africa. Australia will be his next stop before Alaska and the west coasts of Canada and the United States. By the time he reaches his planned ride through Central and South America, he will exceed his 5 continent goal.
The expedition itself is completely self-financed, but Humphreys is trying to raise money for a charity as he pedals his way around the world. The charity, Hope and Homes for Children, is dedicated to providing a family, a home and a future for young victims of war and other disasters. Detailed information is available at www.hopeandhomes.org . Please note that none of the money donated will be used to fund the expedition. All donations go directly to HHC.
Anyone interested in contacting Mr. Humphreys for information about HHC or an update on his progress can do so at www.roundtheworldbybike@hotmail.com .

Students are impressed by the dramatic difference between their lives and the daily "routine" Alastair Humphreys describes.
