What does a PYP language classroom look like? This was the theme, in the spirit of inquiry, of the professional development workshop offered in March by guest presenter Mr. David Tigchilaar and IC PYP Coordinator Ghada Maalouf for Preschool and Elementary teachers. The essence and aim of the workshop was to have immediate practical application for participants by addressing reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing as elements of language and how they are linked through performance tasks to performance assessment. Performance tasks and assessment are activities through which students demonstrate at the end of a unit of inquiry, what they have learned, possibly but not necessarily for an audience. One point of interest was the need for and value of using a variety of text styles to teach a variety of language skills. A particularly useful workshop exercises for teachers had them review the most recent unit of inquiry they had completed to see whether they had incorporated all of the language elements and not missed any. Teachers found this meaningful because it went directly to what they are doing.
