Where we are in time and space was the PYP unit 9éme and grade 3 students investigated during the winter semester. Flight and the human desire to fly were the basic concepts guiding their inquiry. They explored flight beginning with the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. They looked at kites in China 4,000 years ago, hot-air balloons, gliders and airplanes and finally rockets, space ships and space probes. They discussed Leonardo DaVinci, Amelia Earhart, and the Wright brothers. They found out that lift and thrust are the forces that propel a flying object and gravity and drag hold it back. They applied their imaginations to all of this and each one designed a flying machine. The final climax was a musical show for parents titled First Kids in Space about children at a space camp who are given the first ever space mission for children. They have an adventure on the moon where androids that have caught a virus are causing trouble.
