 | | Any student in good academic standing may be a candidate |
Middle school students learn the election process during the civics portion of their social studies program. Each class of first intermediate level students elects one representative. Anyone in the class who maintains good academic standing and demonstrates leadership skills may be a candidate. Candidates have a week in which to campaign before making an oral presentation to classmates outlining their proposed platform for improving Beirut. In addition, they must be willing to accept questions from voters. Speeches and questions proved students have an understanding of what issues confront them in their city and they realize solutions are not easily devised. This year environmental issues were the topic most frequently discussed in platform speeches.
Each school in Beirut then selects one student from the group of election winners to represent them on the Committee of Municipality for Beirut Children chaired by deputy Mrs. Bahia Harriri. Congratulations to Mira Hoballah who will be representing IC!
