 | | The meshing of classroom with library can help students develop good reading habits. | In Ras Beirut, Mrs. Hana Bekdash's 9ème B class is learning the basic elements of a story. The class works with Miss Hana and elementary librarians, Miss Zeina and Miss Renee, as a team. A recent project involved three stories titled Timothée â l'école, Les trois petits mégots, and Le mot interdit. The three stories are read in the library and the classroom following up with discussions of the characters in both places. The new concepts are further reinforced with students designing 'story-maps' to show characters, setting, the story beginning, plot or problem development, story middle and end.
This kind of analysis of the elements of literature encourages young readers with an enriched point of view and added dimension. The close cooperation and connection between classroom and library teaches more than the fundamentals of writing and reading; it allows students to understand their library as an integral part of their school learning experience and a dynamic place for discovery.
The third and final phase of studying the three stories is a theatrical interpretation of each one. Students separated into three groups with each one preparing to assume characters and portray the plot of their story from beginning to end. The performances were attended by the librarians and Elementary Director Mamduha Beidas.
Bravo 9eme B! Encore.
