Sixieme A & B and First Middle Arabic classes at Ain Aar are discussing careers and jobs in class as a unit of their curriculum. In addition to firefighter, policeman and architect, one of the career topics is airline hostess. Afif Kanaan, a member of the First Middle class, mentioned his grandmother’s work as a ground hostess for Middle East Airlines. Mrs. Touma was happy to accept an invitation to meet students and discuss her career. The first hand, personal touch of such a visit enriches the learning experience for students. Mrs. Touma described her work including checking visas and tickets, weighing luggage and personally escorting passengers from the check-in gate to the aircraft. She speaks five languages in addition to her native Arabic and this advantage gave her the opportunity to manage VIP’s and CIP’s along with regular passengers. She reminds us there were no computers in 1957 when she began her career. Everything was done by hand. Her job as a ground hostess gave Mrs. Touma a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment. This feeling is conveyed to students who were well prepared for the meeting with questions.
