The Library Club began as a small group to encourage reading habits and skills among students in the lower elementary grades who were already avid readers. The club began meeting everyday during the first break to read, review and discuss books and other materials as new additions to the library collection. The club is growing in popularity to an extent that the librarians may need to organize a schedule to spread meetings out over the week and keep the group at a manageable size.
As students progress into the upper elementary grades, they may become Library Helpers. This group learns to help shelve books, do book reviews, collect overdue books from classmates and assist students when they are using the library computers. They become young auxilliary librarians. Both these groups of young students are learning more than reading and writing skills. They are acquiring a love and understanding of the library as the important resource it is for research, general information, pleasure and growth.
