Geneva Instructors Visit IC
From October 18 to 25, IC was happy to welcome our first Exchange Teachers of the academic year when Fiona Davison, Head of Humanities and MYP Coordinator, and Richard Bourlet, languages instructor, visited us from the International School of Geneva. Richard and Fiona became immersed in the school as they visited us and even jumped in and taught a class when an unusually strong rain storm with resultant flooding caused some teachers to get stuck in traffic jams early in the morning. They attended a full week of classes on both campuses and had the opportunity to visit around Lebanon. Their whirlwind tourist excursions included a visit to the museum, a walk downtown, travel to Byblos and Baalbek as well as a visit to “Jeita,” Lebanon’s famous Grotto. The two sampled Lebanese cuisine, tasting ‘fattouch’, ‘tabbouleh’ and especially enjoying ‘mezzé'.

IC Teachers Play with Technology
Teachers and staff from all levels of the college joined a 3-day session of workshops sponsored by the Educational Resources Center in cooperation with the IT Department. From September 15 to 17, if a teacher was not involved in SPEC or PYP workshops, one could probably find him/her in computer workshops learning a little bit about computer programs or Web 2.0 technology. Members of the IT Department and selected members of the faculty offered a rich variety of choices focusing on the use of technology in the classroom and for researching on the web. What kind of technology were they exploring? Teachers learned how to use the Smart Board, how to create a Blog (a very popular topic judging from the number of Blogs that have popped up around the IC community lately), and developing creative presentations using the versatile features of PowerPoint, to name just a few of the topics. In other workshops, the teachers explored software specifically designed to facilitate teaching in their disciplines. There was also a set of technology workshops for music teachers, Creating Digital Music, on September 15 and 17.

Student-centered, Problem-based, Experiential, and Collaborative learning (SPEC)
For two weeks in September, Middle and Secondary teachers and administrators joined presenters Bruce Bonney and Cyndi LaPierre from the Antioch Graduate School in New Hampshire to learn more about the SPEC (Student-centered, Problem-based, Experiential and Collaborative learning) approach. This year, there were two sessions of SPEC workshops. Bruce and Cyndi explained that their purpose was to have workshop participants become students themselves and experience the activities as their own students will in various Middle and Secondary school classes this year.
